On Tuesday, September 10, 2024, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua chaired a multi-agency meeting at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi, with the goal of creating a framework to connect the Jua Kali sector to job opportunities.
Gachagua announced through his official X account that the government is implementing a revolutionary approach through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) policy to enhance the dignity of the Jua Kali workforce. This approach aims to transform informal skills and expertise into formal employment and create linkages to opportunities both locally and internationally.
“The Jua Kali Sector is a source of livelihood for millions of our people; the Sector is rich in skills and expertise driving our economy. With the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Policy in place, we are taking a revolutionary approach to dignifying the Jua Kali workforce, as we transform informal skills and expertise into formal employment and providing linkages to opportunities locally and internationally,” Gachagua stated.
He further highlighted that the meeting he chaired has set the country on a path to developing a framework for linking Jua Kali artisans to job opportunities and supporting self-employment.
The meeting was attended by State House Deputy Chief of Staff Josphat Nanok, State Department for Diaspora Affairs PS Roseline Njogu, and State Department for Cabinet Affairs PS Idris Dokota. Other participants included representatives from the State Departments for Technical and Vocational Education Training, Labour and Skill Development, MSME Development, and Housing and Urban Development.
Also present were representatives from Kenya National Quality Authority, National Industrial Training Authority, Technical and Vocational Education Training Authority, TVET Training Curriculum Development, Assessment and Certification Council, Micro and Small Enterprise Authority, and the Kenya National Federation of Jua Kali Federation.
“The multi-agency meeting I chaired today at the Official Residence in Karen, Nairobi, places us on a pathway to developing a framework of linking our artisans to job opportunities, besides financing self-employment,” Gachagua concluded.
