Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has instructed his allied Members of Parliament to rally up a battery of lawyers who will write to the International Criminal Court (ICC) implicating the government for sponsoring a criminal gang in the country known for committing crimes against humanity.

Speaking during a church service in Nyeri County on Sunday, Gachagua alleged that the criminal gang has been reigning terror in the Mount Kenya region and has been regrouped by the government to cause mayhem.

“In the late 80s during the reign of President Moi, the government destroyed the economy and became very intolerant and dictatorial. When the people of this region started saying no a criminal gang was formed to come and punish the people,” Gachagua claimed.

“This gang is known to have committed crimes against humanity. Now with the sponsorship of the government, they have come back and for sure they have started.”

The ousted DP went on to narrate how the gang, in 2009, allegedly invaded a village in Nyeri County and butchered 29 people before raping women and committing other crimes, and it took the intervention of the then Interior Minister the late John Michuki to neutralize their existence.

Gachagua therefore instructed his allies, led by Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia to demand a probe by ICC and bring to book the perpetrators.

“Document the atrocities that were committed by the criminal gang in the 90s because those were crimes against humanity and start engaging the ICC,” Gachagua added.

The former DP has also faulted the National Police Service (NPS) for what he termed aiding the existence of the gang instead of protecting Kenyans.

He has urged President William Ruto to be vigilant and not fall prey to the gang as he will be liable for any harm that they will be caused.

Gachagua also delved into the heaping uproar on abductions, criticizing the state for turning a blind eye to the matter yet families of missing youths remain in anguish while others are being found dead.

He has maintained a bare-knuckle attack on the state since being ousted from office in October 2024, censuring leaders for lack of integrity and accusing leaders for abetting the nation’s crisis including the ongoing abductions.

He was flanked by his spouse Dorcas Rigathi, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Mukurweini MP John Kaguchia, former Nyeri town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, Members of County Assembly led by speaker James Gichuhi among other leaders.
