Narc-Kenya party leader Martha Karua has accused President William Ruto’s administration of orchestrating Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment as a diversion from critical national issues.

Karua argued that the Kenya Kwanza administration is mired in serious concerns, including human rights violations, economic sabotage, denial of healthcare and education, and attempts to extend the presidential term. She said the recent public participation exercise over Gachagua’s impeachment revealed that Kenyans believe the entire Kenya Kwanza government is at fault.

“If the Ruto administration aimed to distract from critical issues—such as gross human rights violations, the unconstitutional Adani deals, the denial of healthcare through SHIF, the lack of access to education, and the attempt to extend the presidential term—it failed miserably. The people of Kenya showed that they are awake and aware,” Karua said.

Speaking at a press conference in Nairobi on Monday, Karua noted that Kenyans were united in their stance, delivering a strong message to both President Ruto and DP Gachagua.

“Kenyans have made it clear: they believe both President Ruto and his deputy Gachagua are impeached. The public participation exercise, intended to address Gachagua’s impeachment, ultimately reminded everyone that both the President and Deputy President stand impeached. They came in together, and Kenyans want them to leave together,” Karua added.

She emphasized that President Ruto is accountable for the current crisis in the country.

“In light of these serious transgressions, it is not just our right but our constitutional duty to hold the President accountable. Impeachment is a serious action, but when the highest office in the land becomes a tool for undermining the Constitution and the people’s welfare, it is necessary,” Karua said.

“Though this impeachment motion may not be tabled before Parliament, which, as far as we are concerned, was dissolved by the people’s sovereign will on June 25, we present these charges to the highest authority in our Republic—the collective conscience of Kenya, the hearts and minds of its people,” she concluded.
