Embakasi North Member of Parliament James Gakuya has backed up the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo, after she resigned from the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests.

Gakuya welcomed Faith Odhiambo’s resignation on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, in an interview with a local media house, where he stated that her stepping aside from the panel was the right thing and that she still has a chance to redeem herself.

“Faith Odhiambo did the right thing by resigning from the compensation panel. She still has a chance to redeem herself and apologise to the LSK,” Gakuya stated.

Likewise, the legislator took on defending the LSK boss from critics, stating that the position she held was not directly involved with the LSK because it was an individual appointment to a particular assignment.

“I would say the position that the Chairperson was elected to hold was not directly involving the LSK because it was an individual appointment to a particular assignment, and therefore, maybe what appears to be wrong is accepting being part of that committee, but largely it does not harm the operation of the LSK,” Gakuya argued.

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President, Faith Odhiambo, resigned from her position as Vice Chairperson of the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Demonstrations and Public Protests.

In her statement on Monday, October 6, 2025, Odhiambo said she decided after assessing the challenges facing the panel and the slow progress caused by ongoing court cases.

Her resignation comes after the court suspended the panel’s operations over a legality row.

She explained that while the panel had a 120-day mandate, its operations had been halted by the courts, making it impossible to achieve its objectives within the limited time left.

Odhiambo, who was appointed to the position when the panel was formed on August 25, 2025, said her resignation was immediate and had already been communicated to the Head of Public Service.

She said the panel’s creation had given her hope for real change in how victims of police excesses and state overreach are treated in Kenya, but the current circumstances had made it difficult to deliver meaningful results.
