The Gatabaki family now says that it has not yet received Ksh.300 million as compensation for their land illegally acquired by the government for the Northern Bypass construction.
The land owner Nancy Wanja Gatabaki claims that private developers are now encroaching on the land she acquired in 1955 and are yet to receive their payment.
“I’ve never been paid a single penny. I have been to DCI when [George] Kinoti was there but nothing has happened,” she said.
She added that Chinese developers have been encroaching on her undeveloped land, maintaining that she has not sold any part of the 206-acre plot.
“The DCI has come to my house telling me that I have 360 acres and I have sold some to Peter Kiarie Muraya. I asked them where, did we go to a lawyer?” she posed.
“You know when you were selling a big land like that one you go to the land board where the money was deposited. In September 2024, Justice Ogutu Mboya ruled that the family is entitled to suitable compensation and that the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) and the National Land Commission (NLC) had trespassed.
“The judge gave me an award. It was in the newspaper for damages not for the land and he said they should come and value the land. Till today nothing has happened,” Wanja added.
Wanja is now pleading for intervention from relevant authorities, noting that the parcel is the only property tied to her.
“This is where we grew up this is home I don’t have another home. My children also this is their shagz. We request even the President to now step in and help us, this is a cry for help. My mom is a widow,” she noted.
