The Ministry of Health has reassured the public that the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) remains operational as the government prepares to introduce the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF). Public Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni emphasized that, despite delays in launching the new scheme, the NHIF continues to provide coverage, ensuring no gap in healthcare services.
Speaking in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County, after a church service on Sunday, Muthoni urged Kenyans to be patient while the government finalizes the new health plan, which she promised would significantly improve the country’s health sector.
She highlighted that the Social Health Insurance scheme would offer greater benefits, allowing access to health facilities without discrimination and supporting all Kenyans, including those at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
“Some Kenyans have for long suffered with NHIF in place, that is why President William Ruto passed this scheme to help the ordinary Kenyan without a job or with a limited income access better healthcare,” said Muriuki.
The PS has also called for concerted efforts in the fight against drugs and substance abuse that have continued to rob society of some of the best brains.
