Mombasa Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir on Monday led thousands of residents of the coastal city on a grand march to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.
From the historic “Mapembeni” tusks, the Governor led Mombasa residents on a walk to Treasury Squareare in a unique show of community resolve against drug abuse.
For many decades, Mombasa County has struggled under the burden of illicit drugs with an increasing number of young people reportedly dropping out of school and battling with addiction.
The Governor put those involved in the criminal enterprise on notice that their days are numbered.
“I will bring the full force of my administration down on you. If you think you will continue corrupting our youth, robbing them of their future in Mombasa then think again! If we can move these thousands here today then imagine what I will do to stop you!” said Governor Nassir.
Mombasa County Government has committed significant resources in the anti-drugs campaign in tackling demand while urging the National Government to take its rightful role in addressing supply.
Governor Nassir is working closely with stakeholders in civil society and security agencies to map out and close all drug dens across the county.
“This is the reason we rolled out the Mombasa Yangu youth unemployment program that has recruited over 2,000at-risk youth from the streets into meaningful employment,” explained Governor Nassir.
He went further to point out that his Government has also put plans in place for a holiday program for school going children to keep them positively engaged while schools are out of session.
The Governor has also successfully completed the construction of Marimani Rehabilitation Center for male patients and Shika Adabu Rehabilitation Center for females.
Moreover, he has spearheaded the establishment of three Methadone Clinics in Kisauni, Miritini and Shimo la Tewa Prison with plans in place for another two sites in Khaderboy and in Port Reitz.
Governor Abdullswamad Sherrif Nassir says his administration is determined to make Mombasa a no go zone for drug abuse.
