Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and his deputy Mathews Owili on Monday led a team of protesters in the county’s capital amid nationwide anti-government demonstrations.
The county bosses were seen speaking and waving to a mammoth crowd Monday morning while atop his car accompanied by a number of leaders.
Anti-riot police officers who were watching at a distance were shortly after engaged in running battles with the crowd and were forced to lob teargas at the rowdy crowd in a bid to disperse them.
The chaos is seemingly slowly escalating as more protesters are now pelting stones at the officers.
Roads have been barricaded by the protesters paralyzing businesses and transport in the region.
Similar scenes are being witnessed in Mathare and Kibra areas of Nairobi as protestors engage police, prompting them to lob cans of teargas.
Citizen TV journalists have reportedly been robbed of their valuables including phones by knife-wielding gangs in Kibra.
