Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has lauded the national government following the announcement by Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on the planned extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to the lakeside city.
Nyong’o, in a statement released on Tuesday, said the project will greatly improve travel between Kisumu and Uganda, supporting both ordinary travelling and business.
The Governor stated that the SGR will open up transportation between the Lake Region and the rest of Kenya, adding that works must now be expedited.
According to the Kisumu County boss, the project was started under retired President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure and was initially set to run from Mombasa to Kisumu, but stalled in Nakuru due to inadequate funds.
“Once completed, the SGR will help spur economic growth in Western Kenya and open up the Western Tourism Circuit which is blessed with many beautiful tourist destinations,” he said.
“It was encouraging to hear Murkomen announce that the government was aiming to do 35 per cent of the project by December this year.”
