Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has denied allegations that she was detained in the United Kingdom for attempting to smuggle large sums of money from Kenya into the European nation. On Monday, she dismissed the claims as fabricated and aimed at tarnishing her image, accusing her political opponents of being behind the rumors.
In a statement, she emphasized that those spreading the false information are “clearly ignorant of the robust nature of UK/Customs/Border control and financial institutions.” She also reassured the public, saying, “I can confirm that my family and I are safe and sound and remain in good standing both home and abroad.”
Governor Ndeti added that she plans to take legal action against those responsible for spreading the rumors and warned that if any harm comes to her family, the culprits will be held accountable.
“Such malicious misinformation has created perceptions about me and my family members that endanger our lives,” she stated. She further advised those involved in spreading the falsehoods to “arm themselves with hard evidence when the law comes knocking.”
Despite the attacks, she remains committed to her work in Machakos County, stating that her administration is nearing the completion of nearly 1,000 projects since August 2022. She also highlighted that in the FY 2023/2024, the county collected Ksh.1.7 billion in own-source revenue, the highest amount since the inception of devolution in Machakos.
