Granny In Siaya Burnt To Death In House Fire

Police in Rarieda sub-county are investigating an incident where an 86-year-old granny died following a house fire at Kocharo village in Siaya County on Monday.

The woman who has been identified as Helidah Nyangweso was burnt to death following a fierce fire that broke out in her house at around 10.30 am.

According to Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo, the incident was reported at Luanda Kotieno Police post by the woman’s son Zedekiah Ouma.

He stated that Ouma reported that the granny was all alone in the house when the fire broke out and when she was heard screaming, the son rushed to the house which had already caught fire.

Kimaiyo added that upon arrival in the house which was on fire, Ouma found when his mother had been burnt while on her bed. He struggled and managed to remove her while still alive.

However, the woman died while they tried to administer first aid on her.

Police officers from Luanda Kotieno visited the scene and established that the deceased had succumbed to the burns.

While confirming the incident, Kimaiyo stated that the cause of fire is not yet known.

The body was taken to Madiany sub-county hospital mortuary pending postmortem as investigations into the matter continue.
