The men’s national football team, Harambee Stars, is expected to host their home matches at Nyayo Stadium during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign. Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa stated that efforts would be made to avoid a situation similar to June, when the team had to play their matches in Malawi during the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Harambee Stars faced Burundi and Ivory Coast at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Malawi, due to the absence of a FIFA-approved stadium in Kenya. In an interview, Mwendwa revealed that FKF plans to seek a temporary license from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to utilize Nyayo Stadium for the Stars’ home matches in the upcoming qualifiers.

“We are in the process of applying for a provisional license this month and I’m certain it will be granted,” Mwendwa remarked.

Mwendwa expressed hope that the government will complete the sports facility in good time.

“I want to promise Kenyans that if the minister finishes the work, we shall host the Afcon qualifiers in the country,” he added.

Kenya’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign will commence with a match against Zimbabwe’s Warriors at Nyayo Stadium on September 2.

Harambee Stars’ next fixture will be against Namibia in Windhoek on September 10. Following this, they will face Cameroon in Yaounde on October 7, with the return leg scheduled in Nairobi on October 15. The campaign will wrap up with a match against Zimbabwe in Harare on November 11, followed by a final game against Namibia in Nairobi on November 19. The top two teams from the group will qualify directly for the biennial tournament.
