Tanzania’s entertainment industry has been rocked by a major regulatory crackdown, with the National Arts Council (BASATA) slapping artistes and event organisers with a combined about KSh928,000 in fines over ethics and compliance violations.
Among the highest-profile casualties of the crackdown is Bongo Flava star Harmonize, who was hit with a fine of about KSh277,000 and handed a suspension.
Why Harmonize and Nandy were fined
The penalties were tied to his Kudos music video, which BASATA found to be in breach of its professional and ethical standards.
Director Kenny, the creative behind the same music video, also faced the music. He received an identical KSh 277,000 fine and was suspended alongside Harmonize, making the Kudos video the single most consequential production caught up in the crackdown.
Popular Tanzanian singer Nandy was not spared either. BASATA cited wardrobe choices and regulatory non-compliance as the basis for the action taken against her. She was fined the equivalent of KSh 146,000.
Beyond individual artistes, several event organisers were also fined or suspended.
Their violations related to permitting failures and other breaches of BASATA’s operational regulations, underscoring that the council’s sweep was not limited to performers alone.
The crackdown reflects BASATA’s ongoing push to enforce stricter professional and ethical standards across Tanzania’s creative industry.
The council has increasingly positioned itself as an active regulator, holding artists, directors and event managers accountable for content and conduct that fall outside its guidelines.
The penalties against names as prominent as Harmonize and Nandy signal that no artist is too big to face consequences, a message likely to reverberate through the wider East African music scene.
