A simple, wordless gesture by an ordinary woman at a Catholic church vigil in Uganda has moved thousands online and reignited a timeless conversation about generosity.
The vigil was held at St Kizito Catholic Church for a man identified as Jayden. Mourners sat under tents as a solemn mass proceeded, the atmosphere heavy with grief. It was in that setting that one woman stepped forward and, without fanfare, changed the mood entirely.
Dressed in a colourful outfit with a yellow cloth tied at her waist and wearing beige and black sandals, the woman had what appeared to be a dark helmet-like covering on her head.
She carried a paper bag tucked under her arm and held a small walking stick in her hand. Everything about her suggested she was a woman of modest means making her way through the night.

As she approached the priest, she set down her stick, lowered herself to her knees and placed a single coin into the collection basket.
She then made the sign of the cross, rose slowly and walked past the coffin as mourners around her looked on in silence.
It was not the amount she gave, but the manner in which she gave it that caught everyone’s breath. She had knelt to offer what she had, in a house of mourning, in the middle of the night.
