A fifth-grade field trip to an Iowa state park turned to tragedy on September 22 when a teacher and one of her young pupils lost their lives after an incident near a reservoir spillway.
The accident took place at Lake MacBride State Park, close to the Coralville Reservoir spillway, during a School of the Wild outing organised for fifth graders from Borlaug Elementary School.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene at around 12:43 p.m. and pulled an adult victim from the reservoir, who was pronounced dead on the spot.
The following day, September 23, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office identified the deceased adult as Hannah Jorgensen, a 24-year-old fifth-grade teacher at Borlaug Elementary.
While search teams combed the area for a missing child throughout the evening of September 22, efforts were paused overnight and resumed the next morning.
Responders recovered the body of ten-year-old Ahmed Osman from the Coralville Reservoir on September 23.
A Community Left Devastated
The Iowa City Community School District described both losses as deeply painful for everyone connected to the school.
“Hannah and Ahmed were deeply valued members of our school district community, and their loss is being felt throughout Borlaug and across our district,” the district said in a statement. “Our hearts are with their families and loved ones, as well as Hannah’s colleagues and students, Ahmed’s classmates and friends, and everyone who knew and cared for them.”
Borlaug Elementary also addressed the wider community directly, acknowledging the weight of grief settling over the building.
“Our building is hurting right now, and so are our hearts,” the school’s statement read. “But knowing that you are all here for us, standing beside us, checking in, and lifting us up, it means more than we can put into words.”
The school district confirmed it would deploy counsellors and additional support staff in the coming days to assist all those affected by the loss.
“We know grief looks different for every person, and our focus will be on caring for our students and staff and giving them the time, space, and support they need,” the district said.
The tragedy has left a profound mark on the Borlaug Elementary community, with the school expressing particular gratitude for the wave of support it received from people near and far following the news.
