The family of Mercy Maina Wachinga, a 32-year-old Nairobi woman, is grappling with profound grief after her death under circumstances that have left those who knew her in disbelief.
Mercy’s body was found inside her rented apartment in the Lavington area of Nairobi after fellow tenants grew alarmed by a foul smell coming from her unit.
The building’s management was alerted, and police officers were called in. They forced open her door and found her lying dead in her bed. The discovery came approximately one month after neighbours had last seen her alive.
Mercy’s Final Wishes for Her Mother
As the mourning deepened, details emerged about requests Mercy had made before she died. She had long harboured a dream of building her mother a house, and she wished for all her possessions to be handed over to her mum after she was gone.
Her mother, Grace Nderitu, told of a woman whose warmth defined her.
“She was a very kind child with a clean heart. She loved me, her mum, and all her siblings,” Grace said.
Grace recalled that the last time she spoke to her daughter was at the beginning of August, and nothing in that conversation suggested Mercy was struggling or in any form of distress.The silence that followed, she said, gave the family no warning of what had happened.
According to a report by NTV Kenya, Mercy did not wish to be buried in a traditional ceremony. Instead, she had expressed a preference to be cremated.
Her family said they were still working through the painful process of planning her final send-off, still reeling from the shock of her passing.
Mercy’s story spread widely online and drew significant reaction from Kenyans, many of whom were troubled by the length of time it took for her body to be found.
The idea that a young woman could lie undiscovered in her home for a full month struck a nerve, prompting conversations about social isolation, the nature of city living, and the distance that can grow between neighbours in urban apartments.
She leaves behind a family still coming to terms with the loss of a daughter and sister who, by all accounts, lived quietly and gave generously.
