President William Ruto has announced a three-day national mourning period following the tragic deaths of 17 pupils at Hillside Endarasha Academy in Nyeri County on Thursday night.
The fire, which erupted in a dormitory at the school around 11 pm, claimed the lives of the young students.
“In solemn tribute to the profound impact the loss of these seventeen children has had on the nation, Kenya will observe three days of national mourning,” Ruto stated.
He has also directed that both the Kenyan and East African Community (EAC) flags be flown at half-mast during this period.
The flags will be lowered from dawn on Monday, September 9, 2024, until sunset on Wednesday, September 11, 2024.
This gesture will be observed at State House, all Kenyan diplomatic missions, public buildings, public grounds, military bases, posts, stations, naval vessels of Kenya, and throughout the entire country.
Further updates will follow.
