Four people have been confirmed dead while multiple survivors are receiving treatment in hospitals after a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) ran over pedestrians in the Karabondi area of Homa Bay county.

The accident happened on Tuesday evening November 28, 2023.

Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga confirmed the accident saying that her government had mobilized the county emergency team.

Wanga said four pedestrians who were knocked by the vehicle died while one survivor in critical condition was transferred to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital while others are receiving treatment at Kendu Bay Sub County Hospital.

“This evening, we were notified of a tragic accident in the Karabondi area involving a PSV and pedestrians, resulting in the loss of four lives.

“Our emergency response teams have been mobilized, and one critically injured survivor has been transferred to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital. Other survivors are currently receiving medical care at the Kendu Bay Sub County Hospital,” Wanga said in a statement.

The Homa Bay governor further called on drivers to adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize the safety of pedestrians and other road users.

“We implore all drivers to strictly adhere to traffic regulations and prioritize the safety of pedestrians and other road users. Let us collectively work to prevent such tragic incidents in the future,” she said.

Wanga additionally condoled with the families affected by the tragedy.

“Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to the families of the deceased. May their souls rest in eternal peace.”

The accident happened as the county is grappling with raging floods.

Over 100 people from Bala and Maswa villages within Karachuonyo Constituency were displaced from their homes on Monday evening after River Awach Tende broke its banks due to heavy downpours on Sunday night.

The families were evacuated to Bala and Buru primary schools after their homes were marooned by water from River Awach Tende.
