A Form Four student has died by suicide in Rachuonyo North Sub-county, Homa Bay County, in an incident that police say is under investigation.

The student, aged 17 and the son of a police officer, was found dead on Monday after leaving his home in Karairo Village, Kokwanyo, in Rachuonyo East Sub-county.

According to Rachuonyo North Sub-county Police Commander Peter Wallah, preliminary investigations indicate the incident may have followed a disagreement at home over a mobile phone.

Wallah said the student’s mother had reportedly confiscated the phone after learning that his academic performance had declined.

Police said the teenager later left home and was found dead within the compound of Mawego National Polytechnic in the neighbouring Rachuonyo North Sub-county.

Authorities said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including why the student went to the institution before his death.

Wallah urged parents and guardians to pay close attention to the emotional wellbeing of their children and seek guidance and counselling services whenever they notice signs of distress.

The body was moved to Rachuonyo South Sub-county Hospital Mortuary in Oyugis pending investigations.
