Lydia Wanjiru has opened up about discovering unexpected details about her late mother, leaving her emotional.
The revelation came on Wednesday, December 10, 2025, as she reflected on family matters and recent conversations with her sister.
She said, “Today I have been ignoring this feeling, let me just express it.”
Lydia explained that she found her sister’s missed call but initially did not want to return it because of her feelings. When she finally did, her sister reminded her, “unajua leo ni birthday yangu,” to which Lydia replied, “It is your birthday too?” She realised that they share a birthday with their late mother.
Lydia Wanjiru explained that the discovery came while she was applying for a passport and had to present her mother’s death certificate.
She said, “I have my mom’s death certificate, and when I went to immigration to apply for my passport, the immigration officer took the death certificate and came back with a piece of paper, and printed my mom’s details, and I was like the names.”
She was surprised to learn that her mother had a third name she had never known before.
“I have always known… me and my mom have two names, I never knew she had a third name, Njogu, and who is this Njogu?” she asked.
Unexpected family history
Lydia also expressed confusion over claims about her mother’s background.
“How is my mom Luo? My mom is not a luo, she wasn’t a luo,” she said.
She added that she is not bringing this up to create conflict but simply to share what she has learned.
“I am not saying this, trying to fight this, I am just…I know her mom, and I know her dad. She died when I was in class 2 in 2002. Of course, I was just a child,” she explained. She said these discoveries are why she prefers not to dig too deeply into family history.
Despite the emotional impact of the revelations, Lydia focused on sharing her feelings honestly. She reflected on the surprise of her sister and their late mother sharing a birthday as well as the unexpected detail of her mother’s third name.
