Cerba Lancet Kenya has unveiled a kit that women can use to self-collect samples for the Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing.
The testing for HPV allows a woman to know if she is at risk of developing cervical cancer.
The HPV DNA Kit is envisioned to improve screening rates and accelerate treatment.
The self-collection kit named Evalyn- Brush, is specifically designed for collecting samples from the vagina.It is said to be more sensitive than a Pap Smear exam and produces quicker results.
The self-testing kit enables women to conveniently collect samples independently and submit them to a laboratory for tests.
Lancet explains that to conduct a self-test, one should;
- Remove the Evalyn- Brush from the packaging.
- Press the sides of the pink cap to remove it from the brush. It is crucial that you do not touch the brush bristles with your hands.

- Return the Evalyn-Brush to the original package.
- Place the Evalyn-Brush in the plastic bag provided, seal it, and submit it to the laboratory.
The test results are available within 1 to 2 days. If the HPV test results are negative, you are not at risk of developing cervical cancer and you do not need another test for 3 to 5 years.
However, if the test comes back positive, it is advisable to see a gynaecologist for further treatment.
