A man arrested by undercover police officers in Embakasi, Nairobi, allegedly selling bhang and Diazepam (D5) to street children was charged with drug trafficking.

Kevin Munyao Muasya, 26, is facing charges of trafficking narcotic drugs contrary to section 4 (a) of the Narcotic and Psychotropic Substances Control Act of 1994.

He is accused of trafficking 600 grams of bhang worth Sh1, 800, and 54 sachets containing Diazepam (D5) valued at Sh1, 620.

Diazepam is used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, and seizures. It is also used to relieve muscle contractions and to provide sedation before medical procedures.

This medication works by calming the brain and nerves.

The suspect was allegedly found selling the substances to street urchins in Vumilia Slums in Embakasi.

Muasya who hails from Kathiani in Machakos County is facing an additional charge of being in possession of the substances contrary to the law.

The officers were pursuing an armed robbery suspect in the area when they met Muasya surrounded by street boys who were allegedly buying the substances from him.

The armed robber disappeared in an alley near where Muasya was allegedly conducting his business and the accused person could not help the police trace him.

The officers from Buruburu police station searched his grey bag and allegedly found that it had a black plastic bag that contained the narcotics and arrested Muasya, and rounded up some of his customers.

The street boys were released without charges.

During interrogations at the police station, Muasya allegedly confessed that he had been selling the drugs at the place he was arrested.

But when he was arraigned at the Makadara Law Courts, he denied the charges before Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi.

He was released on a bond of Sh200,000 and a cash bail of a similar amount.

The case will be mentioned on December 11 this year before the hearing starts on April 22, 2024.

The three police officers are listed as witnesses in the case against Muasya.
