President William Ruto now says that the Huduma Namba initiative carried out by the previous regime was a complete fraud.

Speaking on Friday, the President said the process to have Kenyans use digital Identity cards has been very traumatic to the people. He said through the Huduma Namba, Kenyans lost about Sh15 billion and got a raw deal out of it.

“In the next 90 days, we must have a Digital ID. That digital ID has been traumatic for Kenya. We are all aware that there was another phantom project called Huduma Namba that was a complete fraud. We lost almost 15 billion shillings and got very little out of it,” he said.

The president added that it is possible to get Kenyans’ digital IDs without spending such an amount.

“We must demonstrate in the next 90 days that it is possible for us to have a Digital ID without spending 15 billion and without defrauding the people of Kenya. Those who did that should be ashamed of themselves,” Ruto said.

He spoke during the launch of digitised government services on June 30, 2023.
