Charlene Ruto, daughter of President William Ruto, has joined the national conversation on corruption, misuse of public funds, taxation, unemployment, and debt. Over the past few weeks, she has been intermittently expressing her views.

On Wednesday, July 3, she convened a gathering of ’47 presidents’ from 47 County student associations, where she addressed various issues concerning the youth. Accompanied by these youthful leaders, Ruto assured the media and Kenyans in general that she had acknowledged their concerns and promised action.

“I hear your voices. I understand your concerns. The challenges we face as a generation are real and pressing. From unemployment to the rising cost of living, we are all feeling the impact of our current economic situation,” she said.

“I want you to know, that your engagement in our nation’s affairs is not just welcome, but essential. They all contribute to the vibrant democracy we are building together.”
On X, Ruto went on to encourage the youth to continue in their constructive participation in the country’s affairs, promising Kenyans that she was ready to ‘listen, learn and work’ alongside them.

“This is indeed what I encourage – constructive engagement. Let’s be the generation that’s known not just for its passion, but for its innovation in governance and civic participation. I am here to listen, learn and work alongside you. I am here for you,” she said.

Charlene’s remarks, however, faced criticism and mockery from some Kenyans, who questioned her authority to speak on national issues. Many expressed more interest in hearing from her father, suggesting she lacked the official capacity to initiate substantial change beyond offering sympathetic words.

DJ Krowbar commented, “This is completely out of touch with the country’s current state. Moreover, you do not hold a government position to address the nation. You are the president’s daughter seeking attention.”

Another person remarked, “During Ngina Kenyatta’s entire ten-year presidency, she never spoke this much. ‘I hear you’… but on whose behalf? Our concerns are directed at your father. Stay in your lane!”

Popular content creator Dennis Ombachi also commented, stating, “We haven’t denied that you are a blood ambassador. You represent the bloodshed of youth killed by this government. That’s what you symbolize. Speak up for them or remain silent forever. And I’m not talking about hair.”

Media personality Adelle Onyango also expressed dissatisfaction, saying, “Things don’t go wrong, they START wrong. It all began with @charlruto appointing herself as youth leader and even trying to establish the ‘office of the first daughter’. Gen Z have already presented their demands to your father. Stop this.”

Among the President’s children, Charlene has been the most active and visible, frequently hosting events, participating in youth summits, initiating programs, and commenting on challenging national issues.
