Content creator 2Mbili has opened up about the origin of his nickname, ‘ African Prince of Comedy,’ revealing that the title was not self-proclaimed but was gifted to him during his journey in stand-up comedy.
Speaking during an interview on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, 2Mbili explained that many fans often assume he gave himself the bold title. However, the reality behind the name traces back to a significant moment in his career while performing abroad.
“I didn’t name myself that,” he said, clarifying the long-standing misconception. According to the comedian, the title was given to him by Ugandan comedy star Anne Kansime during a show in Boston, United States.
2mbili highlighted the moment marked a turning point in how he was perceived within the comedy industry, particularly among fellow performers.
Early career and recognition in Africa
At the time, 2Mbili noted that he was not widely known among Kenyan audiences. Instead, his recognition was largely within stand-up comedy circles across Africa.
2mbili recalled that he had already built a strong network, performing in countries such as South Africa, Zambia, Botswana, Uganda, and Nigeria, where he connected with other comedians and grew his reputation behind the scenes.

Despite lacking mainstream visibility in Kenya, 2Mbili emphasised that the support he received from fellow comedians played a crucial role in shaping his career. “The Kenyan fan base didn’t know me,” he admitted, adding that his early audience consisted mainly of industry peers rather than the general public.
Beyond the story behind his nickname, 2Mbili also shared insights into what it takes to stand out in comedy and content creation.
He stressed the importance of uniqueness, referencing the idea of being a “purple cow”, something that stands out in a crowded space.
According to him, gaining attention is only the first step; sustaining success requires consistency and continuous improvement.
The comedian also highlighted the value of testing content on social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook before presenting it to larger audiences.
By doing so, creators can gather feedback, refine their material, and better understand what resonates with their audience.
