Harambee Starlets forward Violet Nanjala Wanyonyi believes that rejoining her Moroccan club, Municipal de Laayoune, will bring her closer to her dream of playing in Europe. After a planned move to the Israel Women’s Premier League fell through due to escalating security concerns amidst the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, Nanjala returned to the North African giants in mid-September. The Moroccan side welcomed her back with a new contract.
“This will be my last season with the club, and I’m grateful for the warm welcome. I’ve been here for the last two seasons, so rejoining wasn’t a surprise—it feels like home,” said Nanjala.
“My dream has always been to play in Europe, and I hope scouts will notice me by the end of the season. We’ll begin the new season this weekend, and I’m ready to help the team finish at the top.”
Nanjala first joined the team in October 2022 on a two-year contract, quickly proving her worth by becoming the Moroccan league’s top scorer with 23 goals in her debut season, helping Municipal de Laayoune finish third. Her stellar performance led the club to offer her a second chance after the failed transfer.
A lethal goal-scorer, Nanjala, the eldest of five children, started her football career at Trans Nzoia Falcons straight out of high school. In the 2020 season, she finished as the second-highest scorer, just one goal behind Mwanahalima Adam Jereko of Thika Queens. During the 2020/21 season, she was loaned to Vihiga Queens, scoring one of two goals for them in Egypt during the inaugural Women’s Champions League.
