Five suspected al-Shabaab terrorists were reportedly killed during a clash with police in Guba, Elwak, Mandera County. According to police reports, the death toll among the suspects is expected to rise as blood trails were found leading towards the main Kenya-Somalia border.
The incident occurred in the evening of Thursday, July 11, when a Special Operations Group (SOG) team engaged suspected terrorists spotted in the area. The police officers were ambushed, leading to a fierce confrontation.
Authorities recovered various weapons from the suspects involved in the clash. The area near the Kenya-Somalia border is frequently used by terror groups for attacks, with militants often crossing into Kenya and retreating back to Somalia.
The SOG team had been tracking the terrorists for several hours before the ambush occurred. Four SOG members sustained serious injuries during the attack, requiring evacuation by helicopter due to the remote and risky terrain.
Police indicated there could be casualties on both sides, although details were not immediately provided. Security operations in the region have previously thwarted planned terrorist attacks, including a recent operation in Alango, Garissa, where a significant arsenal was seized.
Additional personnel have been deployed in the area to enhance security measures, with residents urged to collaborate closely with security agencies to combat the ongoing threat.
