On Sunday, President William Ruto met with Somalia’s President Hassan Mohamud in Kigali, Rwanda, during the inauguration ceremony for Rwandan President Paul Kagame, who was being sworn in for his fourth term. According to a statement from the Somalia President’s office, their discussions focused on urgent security concerns in the East Africa region. The two leaders also explored opportunities for enhancing cooperation as partner states.
“In Kigali, His Excellency President Hassan Mohamud held a meeting with H.E. President William Ruto. Their discussions centred on the pressing challenges facing the region, including efforts to counter terrorism and explore further avenues of cooperation,” Villa Somalia said on X.
The communication added that Ruto and Mohamud committed to enhancing regional peace and stability.
The two leaders reaffirmed the enduring Somalia-Kenya partnership and fostered strong people-to-people relations.
“They expressed a mutual commitment to advancing regional peace, stability, and development, guided by shared values.”
President Paul Kagame was sworn in for a fourth term as Rwanda’s president after securing 99 percent of the vote in last month’s election.
The ceremony, held at the Amahoro National Stadium in Kigali, drew thousands, including several African heads of state. Kagame has held significant power in Rwanda since his rebel forces took control at the end of the genocide that resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus, effectively ending the genocidal regime.
