The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is investigating John Koveti Lumula, the head of cleaning services at the Kakamega County Government, over Ksh. 615 million in unexplained wealth, which is suspected to have been acquired through the theft of public funds.

EACC spokesperson Eric Ngumbi confirmed that Lumula was arrested this week and taken to the commission’s Bungoma regional offices, where he recorded a statement. The investigation was initiated following complaints alleging that Lumula had amassed unexplained wealth through kickbacks.

The anti-graft agency believes that the county official received the funds from suppliers and contractors while serving in the procurement department before his transfer to his current role. According to the EACC, Lumula’s multi-million-shilling assets include a top private school called West Bridge Elite School, valued at Ksh. 200 million, as well as hotels, landed properties, commercial buildings, and high-end vehicles.
