The Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) is looking into two incidents of alleged police brutality that occurred in Kisumu and Nairobi during the anti-government protests on Monday.

According to a statement issued by the Authority’s chairperson, Anne Makori, on Tuesday, IPOA officers deployed across the country to monitor the conduct of men in uniform observed an incident in Kisumu in which a University student was fatally shot.

According to the IPOA, elsewhere in Nairobi, a civilian was allegedly seriously injured by police at the Toi Market.

“The Authority has since launched investigations into the incidents and is also on standby to take up investigations for any incidents that may arise in the interim,” the statement from IPOA reads.

At the same time, the IPOA noted that some officers were injured during the day-long protests that also led to destruction of property.

“IPOA strongly condemns the provocation witnessed from both the members of the public and politicians and calls upon them to abide by the law in exercising their constitutional right to demonstrate, in particular the Public Order Act, Penal Code and all other laws relevant to public order management,”
