Nairobi patron for the Democracy for Citizens’ Party (DCP) and former chairman of the Kenyatta International Convention Centre board Irungu Nyakera has shared how his 96-year-old grandmother is supporting his gubernatorial bid.
According to Nyakera, his grandmother has taken it upon herself to back his bid for Nairobi governorship in a move that he hailed as genuine and sincere, going by her recent actions.
In a statement on his social media accounts on Monday, February 9, 2026, Nyakera shared how his grandmother braved the darkness at night to visit the neighbour who resides in Nairobi but had travelled upcountry.
“Three days ago, I visited my 96-year-old grandmother in Murang’a. Later that day, while attending a funeral, I met Mama Martin, a village mate who also lives in Nairobi,” Nyakera said.

“She told me that the previous night, around 9 pm, my grandmother had visited her after hearing she was in town, simply to ask her to support me in my journey to serve as Nairobi Governor,” he added.
Visit that moved Nyakera
The night visit moved Nyakera, who noted that her belief in his ambition is pure and genuine.
He also appealed to others to believe in his journey, expressing hope that more supporters would back his bid.
“I was deeply moved that at 96 years, my cucu chose to walk out at night simply to speak for me and ask others to believe in this journey. This kind of support is pure and genuine, and I pray that we are blessed with more supporters who are just as genuine and selfless,” he added.
Nyakera, who is a close associate of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has expressed interest in the Nairobi gubernatorial race.
Nyakera’s promises to Nairobians
Nyakera outlined his vision to generate more revenue through a digital address system in a statement on September 16, 2025, detailing services that city residents will enjoy should he succeed in his bid.
“We will use this revenue to clear genuine pending bills, improve roads and drainage, install street lights, provide school meals, support small businesses, upgrade markets, collect garbage, clean our rivers, improve health centres, upgrade slums and make our neighbourhoods safer,” he stated.

The incumbent, Governor Johnson Sakaja, has given a strong indication that he will also be seeking to defend the seat.
Others lining up for the race are Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino.
