Japheth Ouko Mayore Isaboke, the senior prosecutor in Kilgoris, Narok County, arrested over bribery allegations on Sunday has been sent on compulsory leave.

Mr Isaboke is the principal prosecution counsel in charge of the Kilgoris Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested him for allegedly soliciting a Ksh.50,000 bribe from a businessman to fast-track a court case.

EACC said the prosecutor negotiated the bribe downwards to Ksh. 40,000, but the complainant refused to pay and reported the matter to the anti-graft agency.

Isaboke was arrested while receiving Ksh.20,000 as part of the bribe, EACC said.

Following the report, the Director of Public Prosecutions Renson Ingonga ordered that Isaboke proceed on compulsory leave immediately pending internal investigations, according to a Monday statement from the ODPP.

“The ODPP undertakes to cooperate with the relevant investigative agency and pledges appropriate action will be undertaken including the decision to prosecute,” Ingonga’s office added.

Isaboke has since been released after paying a Ksh.30,000 cash bail as EACC continues probing the case.
