Jeff Koinange had Kenyans doubled over with laughter on Wednesday, September 2, after a clip from his JK Live show went viral, showing the veteran journalist completely tongue-tied trying to say a common Kenyan slang word.
The moment happened during a studio interview at JK Live, where Jeff was seated opposite MP Ndindi Nyoro.
While relaying audience feedback about the show, Jeff attempted to use the word mwecheche and immediately fell flat, stumbling over the syllables in a way that had his guest grinning.
What does mwecheche mean?
For those not plugged into everyday Nairobi street language, mwecheche is a widely used Sheng term meaning something fresh, new, cool or exciting.
It is the kind of word you would hear freely in matatus, estates and among the youth, but clearly not in the schools Jeff attended.
After the embarrassing stumble, Jeff turned to Ndindi and asked whether he knew what the word meant.
Ndindi confirmed he did, but when Jeff pressed him for an explanation, the MP could not resist taking a jab at his host.
“Si ni mwecheche tu. Jeff bana. We unajua ulienda group of schools,” Ndindi said, laughing as he teased Jeff about his elite education background being the reason he had no clue about the term.
Jeff, taking it in good spirit but slightly wounded, shot back:
“Mbona unanidharau?”
Ndindi promised to break down the full meaning of the word for Jeff once the cameras stopped rolling.
The short clip spread quickly online, with many Kenyans finding the exchange relatable and hilarious in equal measure.
