Cabinet Secretary nominee for Mining, Hassan Joho, has addressed his earlier statements about not engaging with President William Ruto. During his appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments, Joho acknowledged his previous criticism of the Kenya Kwanza administration but emphasized that his nomination presents an opportunity to effect the change he has long advocated for. He described his nomination as a call to serve the nation.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula, who chairs the vetting committee, initially intervened to stop Joho from answering a question regarding his past remarks. However, Lesuuda insisted that Joho respond.
She referenced Joho’s previous public statements, saying, “During your preamble, you thanked His Excellency the President for nominating you. That is why you are here before this committee. You are on record for having said, ‘I don’t ever dream of engaging with Ruto. What would I discuss with Ruto?'”
In response, the former Mombasa governor stated, “Only a fool does not change his mind. I have been a big critic of this government. Now I have an opportunity to make a difference, and I will do just that.” Joho pledged to rise above local politics and assist President Ruto in uniting the country.
He assured the MPs that, if approved, he would focus on his mandate to serve the nation and avoid political entanglements.
“I will strive to unite even those in Mombasa and help the President unite the country,” Joho said. “I must rise above local, divisive conversations. Every Kenyan must be served equally. My goal is to unite Kenyans, including leaders. Politicians have their space to say what they will, but I want to see a united Kenya,” he added.
