The Kenyan government has announced that approximately 26,000 teachers employed on contracts in Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in 2023 will transition to permanent and pensionable terms starting July 1. This shift provides significant relief to many teachers who had expressed concerns about their wages and overall financial stability.

Previous Terms for JSS Intern Teachers

Monthly Salary : JSS Interns: Sh20,000 , Lower Primary Interns: Sh15,000

Benefits : No allowances , No health insurance

New Permanent and Pensionable Terms
Job Group C2: Equivalent to a senior teacher at the primary school level

Salary : Starts at Sh34,955 , Maximum of Sh43,694 , Automatic increase every three years

 Allowances for Job Group C2

Housing Allowance: Nairobi: Sh16,500 ,  Major municipalities: Sh12,800 , Minor municipalities: Sh9,600 , Other areas: Sh7,500
– Annual Leave Allowance: Sh6,000 (paid once)
– Commuter Allowance: Sh4,000
-Hardship Allowance: Sh10,900 (for those in hardship areas)

 Additional Benefits
– Health Insurance Scheme: Provided by the employer

This transition addresses the protests and concerns raised by the teachers over the past two weeks regarding inadequate wages and lack of benefits. The new terms offer a more stable and supportive employment framework for the teachers, ensuring better financial security and professional growth opportunities.
