A virtual court session debating the proposed deal by Indian firm Adani Airport Holdings to take over operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for 30 years took an unexpected turn when Kenyans joined the hearing to express their opinions. The session descended into chaos as participants began chanting “Adani must go” after the live link was shared across social media, encouraging people to join the session.
The Ksh.238 billion deal, which aims to upgrade JKIA under a Public Private Partnership (PPP), has faced significant public criticism for being shrouded in secrecy. To address the situation, Justice Bahati Mwamuye intervened and adjourned the session to October 22, 2024.
“My apologies, counsel. This is perhaps one of the challenges we face. We’re not able to prevent these disruptions. Let us reconvene on Tuesday at 11:00 am in open court,” Justice Mwamuye ruled.
This disruption highlights how social media has become a tool for digital activism, with Kenyans mobilizing online to demand better governance. This movement has given rise to the Gen Z movement, which has significantly influenced the country’s political landscape. Notable actions stemming from this activism include President William Ruto’s withdrawal of the Finance Bill 2024 and the firing of the entire Cabinet, marking Gen Z as a new force in Kenyan politics.
