A family in Butere, Kakamega County is seeking justice for their kin who was shot dead by police in an alleged case of mistaken identity.

Albert Atulo stated that his son Daniel was shot dead, while his friend Boaz Katiech was injured, when police opened fire on the two men in Khwisero. Daniel, 21, from Eshinyulu village in Eshikunga, Butere Constituency, was the youngest in his family.

“They left Butere for Khwisero before midnight. Their girlfriends worked at a local bar in Khwisero. The two decided to wait for the girls to finish their shift.”

They were then accosted by police officers, resulting in one being killed on the spot. Katiech, who survived the incident, is recovering from gunshot injuries.

Officers from Khwisero police station are reported to have shot at the two men, mistakenly thinking they were gangsters who had been terrorizing locals.

Area police boss James Momanyi said a multi-agency probe is ongoing.
