Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has voiced his concerns regarding the escalating political tensions in Kenya. Speaking at Mweiga Stadium in Nyeri during a memorial service for the 21 pupils who tragically died in the Hillside Endarasha Academy fire, Kalonzo noted the weighty political moments the nation is currently experiencing. “There is political tension in this country. Let us pray for the country,” he urged, emphasizing the need for unity as the nation mourns the loss of these children.
His remarks come amid reports of a planned impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, with signature collection for the motion reportedly underway. Kalonzo highlighted the growing divide, mentioning that Gachagua and President William Ruto appear to have severed ties. The Deputy President has warned Ruto not to forget the support he received from the Mt. Kenya region during his presidential campaign.
Kalonzo reassured the people of Nyeri of his continued support, stating, “Go tell Riggy G, God is on the throne,” and adding, “Kenya is bigger than all of us.” He indicated that he would visit Nyeri town and Karatina after the service to discuss important matters with the local populace.
Present at the service were Gachagua, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa, and various MPs and MCAs. Gachagua is currently facing significant challenges, as the Kenya Kwanza administration seems determined to push for his removal from office. In a television appearance last Friday, Gachagua subtly urged President Ruto to “get his house in order,” reminding him of the importance of the Mt. Kenya region’s support in the 2022 elections.
Additionally, the Independence party Kanu has weighed in, stating that if an impeachment motion is to be tabled, it should target both the President and his deputy.
