Narc Kenya Party Leader Martha Karua has issued a warning to the Inspector General of Police, stating that he will be held personally accountable for any violations of the Kenyan constitution by the police.
In a statement shared on her official X account on Saturday, August 10, 2024, Karua emphasized that the 2010 constitution is a living document that everyone must uphold. The 2022 presidential running mate for the Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition party highlighted the importance of respecting human life and dignity.
“Reminding the Inspector General of Police that the constitution of Kenya 2010 is a living document that must be adhered to by all persons, respect for human life and dignity is not an option, your continued violations will be accounted for individually,” Karua stated.

Karua’s comments follow her visit to the home of businessman Jimi Wanjigi in Muthaiga, where she urged the police, who had conducted a raid on the property, to depart.
In her confrontation with the officers stationed outside Wanjigi’s residence, Karua insisted that the family should be allowed to live in peace without interference. She also threatened to file a lawsuit against the police if they did not withdraw from the premises.
“Hii sio camp ya polisi, hii ni nyumba ya mwenyewe na familia ingetaka kukaa kwa utulivu bila kubabaika, mmefanya yale mmefanya, sasa tunawaomba muondoke bila kukawia,” Karua said.
A multi-agency security team had been stationed outside businessman Jimi Wanjigi’s residence at 44 Muthaiga in Nairobi for several hours before finally breaking in to search the premises for him and what they described as additional evidence.
On Thursday, August 8, 2024, the security team forcibly entered Wanjigi’s home in an unsuccessful attempt to arrest him. During their search, police claimed to have discovered tear gas canisters in a vehicle allegedly belonging to Wanjigi, which was parked at the entrance to his home.
Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli stated that they were actively looking for Wanjigi and urged him to report to the nearest police station. However, Wanjigi later asserted that he was not the owner of the vehicle in which the tear gas canisters were found during the Nane Nane demonstrations in Nairobi.
In related news, the process of appointing a new Inspector General of Police is underway following the resignation of Japhet Koome on July 12, 2024. President William Ruto has nominated Douglas Kanja to serve as the acting Inspector General.
