A Meru MCA behind the latest impeachment motion against Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been summoned by the UDA party. Zipporah Kinya, who is also the deputy majority leader, has been requested to appear at the party headquarters tomorrow.

“To discuss this matter further and align on the way forward, you are requested to report to the party headquarters on Monday, July 22, 2024, for preliminary discussions on the issue,” reads the letter addressed to the member, signed by acting party Secretary General Cleophas Malala.

The summon comes as Malala asked the member to withdraw the motion “in the interest of the party’s cohesion and stability.” According to the SG, the current socio-political climate across the country calls for the party to demonstrate unity and strategic foresight.

Malala also noted that a party leadership meeting has been planned for Thursday to discuss the matter extensively. “Your presence and insights at these meetings will be crucial for our collective strategy and decision-making process,” the letter further reads.

The motion by the member against the governor is the third. Kinya, who is also the Deputy Majority Leader, tabled the motion last Wednesday. She has leveled three counts against the governor: alleged gross violation of the Constitution, alleged gross violation of various national and county laws, and alleged abuse of office.

“Public petitions have been presented to the county assembly including petition No. 5 of 2023 brought by 1,611 members of the public and statements have been sought by the members of the county assembly on the various gross violations and instances of abuse of office by the governor and recommendations made by the county assembly on the various gross violations,” Kinya said.

Kinya reported that various reconciliation efforts aimed at addressing the concerns raised by the public and members of the county assembly have not been successful, leading to the introduction of a new ouster motion.

The deputy majority leader stated that the governor’s continued tenure has affected the effective delivery of services to the people of Meru County and has caused reputational issues for the governor’s office, the deputy governor’s office, the assembly, its leadership, and the people of Meru. This impeachment motion against Kawira is the third one since she assumed office.
