The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a high alert following an outbreak of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in Rwanda. Although no cases have been detected in Kenya, authorities are taking preventive measures due to the close travel links between the two nations. The Marburg virus is highly contagious and lethal, with fatality rates reaching up to 88%.

Symptoms include high fever, severe headache, body weakness, and bleeding from multiple areas. The MoH has enhanced surveillance at all entry points and urged the public to remain vigilant. They recommend avoiding close contact with infected individuals or those suspected of being infected, seeking immediate medical attention if Marburg-like symptoms arise, and avoiding sharing personal items such as towels, utensils, or clothing.

The Ministry also advised the public to wear protective gear when caring for individuals suspected of having MVD, frequently wash hands with soap or use hand sanitizer, and exercise caution when traveling to affected areas. Travellers should stay informed of health advisories for their destinations and report any unusual symptoms, particularly if they have recently visited areas with MVD outbreaks.
