Kenya Power has announced a massive blackout in Nairobi on Wednesday, 10 May 2023.
In a statement, the power utility listed a number of areas within the city that will experience the blackout.
“The following areas will experience power outages from 9am to 5pm on Wednesday 10 May 2023,” KPLC said in the statement.
The affected areas include; United Nations (UN) Avenue, UN Crescent, UN, Whispers Avenue, Daisy Drive, Magmolia Close, Embassy of Morroco, Embassy of Tunisia, Embassy of Colombia, Lobelia Drive, Camelia CI, Anselia CI, Eaton Place and adjoining customers.
Other areas include; Nguluni Market, Kithimani Market, Kisukioni Market, Matuu ma Mwitu, Kituluni, Kayukuni and adjacent customers.
Also affected are areas of Kaloleni Estate including the social hall, United Energy along Jogoo Road and adjoining areas.
Parts of Waiyaki Way were also listed as being affected.
Westlands Area, Sarit Centre, Consolata Shrine, Delta Towers, Ring Road Westlands, Parklands, Baptist Church, Pakistan High Commission and all adjoining customers.
Also listed are parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County and parts of Vihiga County.
On 16 March, KPLC also announced a similar blackout affecting Nairobi for what it said was scheduled maintenance.
A week before the 16 March announcement, the country was hit by a nationwide blackout caused by a system fault. Kenya Power is the sole distributor of electricity in the country, and most of its power comes from the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).
While the blackout is necessary to allow maintenance work to be carried out, it is likely to cause significant disruption to businesses and households in the affected areas.
However, Kenya Power has assured customers that it is working to restore normalcy as soon as possible.
Despite the inconvenience caused by the blackout, scheduled maintenance work is crucial to ensure that the country’s electricity distribution infrastructure is in good working condition.
