A week before the 16 March announcement, the country was hit by a nationwide blackout caused by a system fault. Kenya Power is the sole distributor of electricity in the country and most of its power comes from the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen).

While the blackout is necessary to allow maintenance work to be carried out, it is likely to cause significant disruption to businesses and households in the affected areas.

However, Kenya Power has assured customers that it is working to restore normalcy as soon as possible.

Despite the inconvenience caused by the blackout, scheduled maintenance is essential to ensure that the country’s electricity distribution infrastructure is in good working order.
