Shujaa started the HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Series on the back foot and ended the competition dismally.
Kenya Sevens team has lost all the three Series matches in Hong Kong.
Shujaa commenced the showdown from the wrong blocks when they fell to World Rugby Sevens Series leaders and thirteen-time champions New Zealand 29-5 in their opening pool D fixture played at Hong Kong Stadium on Friday morning.
McGrath’s side was hopeful of seeking redemption, but their attempt was repulsed as Ireland scourged them 26-14 on Saturday. The defeat ended Shujaa’s hope of reaching the quarter finals.
South Africa piled another misery to Kenya after beating them 26-17 in the last match of the fixture.
Shujaa is currently placed 13th overall on the series log with 29 points and will now shift focus on a strong finish against heavyweights Samoa in the ninth place quarterfinal at 4.16am EAT on Sunday 2 April 2023.
The relegation threat is now looming as they prepare for the upcoming Singapore and Toulouse Sevens.
The twelfth, thirteenth, and fourteenth placed teams at the end of Toulouse Series will enter a four-team relegation play-off together with the Challenger Series 2023 winners at the twelfth and final round of the London Series.
And Shujaa’s performance clearly indicates the possibility of being axed into relegation at the end of the Sevens Series.
