President William Ruto has expressed solidarity with Libya in the aftermath of deadly floods that have killed thousands and left thousands more missing.

In a short message shared on social media, Ruto said Kenya stands with Libya during this difficult time.

“Our solidarity with the people of Libya in the face of devastating floods that have led to loss of lives and destruction of property. Kenya stands with you,” Ruto said.

According to reports, over 5,000 people have died in floods caused by a deadly storm from the Mediterranean Sea.

Over 10,000 others are said to be missing, even as rescue operations continue.

The floods were so deadly that they wiped out almost half of the city of Derna in Libya, leaving massive destruction of houses.

In videos and photos shared online, cars could be seen either buried in the mud or flipped on roofs and fallen trees.

Houses are also swept away or engulfed in mud.

The floods hit a day after a devastating earthquake struck Morocco, killing over 2000 people and leaving thousands more critically injured.
