The Nairobi Business Community has voiced their disapproval of the ongoing protests, citing significant financial losses due to looting and business closures. Ferdinand Kamau, the chairperson of the Nairobi Business Community, stated that while they support the right to protest, they condemn the violence and disruption of businesses that have occurred during these demonstrations.
Kamau also criticized the practice of closing the country twice a week, calling it detrimental to the economy.
“We have lost more than Sh6 billion in the last four weeks not only because of goons but also closing our businesses during these protests. You close the country twice each week, how much do you lose? Too much!”
The community urged Gen Z to allow the government sufficient time to address their demands and called on parents to encourage their children to conduct peaceful demonstrations.
They also reiterated their previous stance that they will mobilize to protect their businesses from hired goons disguising as peaceful protesters.
Kamau emphasized that business owners in Nairobi would be prepared to safeguard their establishments and support security agents.
“Last week, we protected nearly 99 percent of the businesses in the CBD, and we will do the same tomorrow. We will not close our businesses and go home,” Kamau declared.
During last week’s protests, business people were seen patrolling the Central Business District (CBD) wearing orange reflectors and armed with batons to protect businesses and prevent looting or property damage.
Despite President William Ruto withdrawing the proposed tax hikes and dismissing nearly all of his cabinet, youth-led protests continue across Kenya. Activists are now calling for Ruto’s resignation and demanding reforms to tackle corruption and improve governance.
