Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta is now a happy and proud man. Reason? Imagine walking into a foreign land to preside over an international event, only for your fellow citizen to emerge as the biggest winner.
That honour went to Rejoice Waithera, a 23-year-old Kenyan, who was crowned with the prestigious Star Prize during the Future Africa Leaders Awards 2025 held in Lagos, Nigeria.
Through its official and verified X handle, the Office of the 4th President of Kenya confirmed the win, noting that Waithera’s achievement was a moment of pride for the country.
Pride on foreign soil
“We congratulate Rejoice Waithera, a 23-year-old Kenyan, for winning the prestigious Star Prize at the Future Africa Leaders Awards 2025 in Lagos, Nigeria,” the office stated on X.

The awards ceremony took place at the Loveworld Nation Arena and brought together young leaders from across the African continent.
Uhuru Kenyatta attended the event at the invitation of Pastor Chris Oyakhilome and delivered the keynote address, which centred on youth leadership and Africa’s future.
While addressing the gathering, Kenyatta praised Africa’s youth as the continent’s greatest asset, insisting that transformation would come from within.
“We have been told of the great wealth beneath Africa’s soil, but our greatest resource is within the minds and hearts of our young people,” he said.
He added that young Africans are not leaders of tomorrow but leaders of today, shaping what lies ahead.
The former Head of State also commended award recipients for choosing service over self and vision over fear, remarks that closely mirrored the spirit of Waithera’s recognition.
The Office of the 4th President of Kenya echoed this sentiment, describing the win as evidence that Kenyan youth continue to shine on global platforms.

“This recognition reflects the growing impact of young Kenyan leaders in driving positive change across Africa,” the office stated.
A continental message
During the ceremony, Kenyatta also praised Pastor Chris Oyakhilome for founding the Future Africa Leaders Foundation, calling it a platform that not only celebrates success but instils purpose among young people.
He further acknowledged former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, fondly referring to him as Baba, for mentoring Africa’s next generation of leaders.
Beyond the awards, Kenyatta delivered his New Year goodwill message, calling for unity, integrity, and service-driven leadership across the continent.
“May Africa rise, built by Africans, strengthened by our unity,” he said.
For Waithera, the Star Prize marked a defining moment, positioning her among Africa’s most promising young leaders.
For Kenya, it was a proud reminder that its youth continue to stand tall on the continental stage.
