Kenyan woman dies in the US after being hit by speeding car

A Kenyan woman died after being hit by a speeding motor vehicle in Newburyport, Massachusetts. According to the police, Mercy Wamaitha Kimani, 41, was struck by an SUV while walking along Low Street in Newburyport on June 24 around 9pm.

She was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead. The police are still investigating the accident, but said the SUV driver remained at the scene.

“On the 30th of June 2023, it was received through the embassy emergency cellphone of a report of the above-named Kenyan national, who met her death after being knocked down by a vehicle while walking along the street on the night of June 24th, 2023 at Newburyport, Massachusetts,” the Kenyan Embassy in US said.

According to the embassy, the phone call was made by one William Melkonian, an Assistant District Attorney in-charge of motor vehicle unit.

The deceased was the daughter of Jane Kimani and Francis Kimani of Thika.

In 2021, a Kenyan who lived in the US died after she was hit by a speeding car in Maryland. Hellen Kemunto Jorgensen was hit and killed by a vehicle as she crossed an intersection of Ager Road and Hamilton Street in West Hyattsville, Maryland.

Kemunto who until her death worked as a Home Health Aide hail from Kisii County and did not have any relatives in the US.

Her death came just days after another Kenyan based in the US died after she was involved in a grisly road accident.

Leah Wangari Gatonye Dubs, who was the founder of Kilimani Mums Uncensored, died on August 15, 2021 following the accident that took place in South Carolina.
