The allegations against the human rights activist regarding the planned protests against the Finance Bill, 2024, have stirred controversy and raised concerns about the integrity of the initiative.

Accusations of hijacking the protests for personal gain, particularly through alleged financial incentives from influential individuals within the civil society circle, have cast doubt on the activist’s motives.

These allegations have not only elicited backlash from Kenyans within informal settlements, who are typically mobilized with minimal financial resources to attend protests, but they have also sparked a wider debate on social media about the role of paid activism and its potential impact on genuine citizen action in governance.

The revelation of a well-funded meeting held in the activist’s upscale office in Kilimani has further fueled suspicion and skepticism surrounding the authenticity and grassroots nature of the protest initiative.

As the controversy unfolds, the activist finds himself under scrutiny and pressure to address the allegations and restore public trust in the integrity of the protest movement.

“We are notified of a persons planning to enrich themselves by pretending to mobilise poor slum dwellers to protest tomorrow. This is a noble cause that is supported across the social divide. Let us flush out parasites,” EyePointKE posted on X.

Another user @Kimunzi_ wants an honest protest, asking activists from hijacking a genuine movement.

“We are aware of some guys receiving Sh5 million to mobilize. Why pay people to express their genuine feelings? Let us not allow greedy people to disturbise the government for few coins.”

The allegation against the popular woman activist for neighborhood issues in Nairobi, regarding the purported receipt of Sh2.8 million to mobilize more people for the upcoming protests, has sparked controversy and drawn scrutiny from social media users.

While some have criticized the activist for allegedly exploiting the protest for financial gain, others have defended her, highlighting the importance of unity in addressing the concerns about the high tax regime.
