New Kakamega Homeboyz head coach Ken Kenyatta is optimistic about winning silverware this season. However, he emphasizes that the team must put in extra effort to reach their goals. Kenyatta was officially unveiled on Friday at Abana Beingo and aims to continue the success of his predecessor, Bernard Odhiambo. Odhiambo led the team to victory in the FKF Cup during the 2022/2023 season before moving to KCB last month.
“I respect other teams because everyone wants to be a champion, but preparations and readiness will determine who lifts the title at the end of the season,” said Kenyatta.
The tactician believes he has a good team generally and may just beef up a few departments after the departure of senior players at the end of the season.
Kenyatta, who signed a one-year deal, will be assisted by Dancun Omondi, as John Waw and Boniface Imbenzi retain their positions as goalkeeping coach and team manager.
“Homeboyz have tasted the FKF Cup title and expectations are high. This means we have to work extra hard. Everyone loves to be associated with gold but very few know the difficult process it takes to have the finished product,” added Kenyatta.
The experienced coach previously led KRA FC to victory in the 2013 FKF Premier League, overcoming a 2-0 deficit to defeat Posta Rangers 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in regulation time. The team, originally known as the Tax Men’s Club, later rebranded to Ushuru FC before shutting down in 2020. K
enyatta then took over Talanta FC the following season, guiding them to the FKF Premier League after winning the National Super League title in 2021. However, he was dismissed towards the end of last season due to poor results.
Although Kenyatta has not yet secured a major title, he has developed many talents, including former Gor Mahia captain Philemon Otieno and Kenyan internationals Geoffrey Kataka and Shaban Odhoji, among others. As he settles into the Mumias Complex training base, Kenyatta acknowledges the challenging task ahead but believes that his 20 years of experience will help him bring silverware to the “Mulembe Nation” team.
